General Requirements

Start with the vehicle and work you plan to do

Choose the appropriate CDL class and endorsements before selecting practice access or arranging a test vehicle. A qualifying combination, a large single vehicle and a passenger vehicle can follow different licensing paths. Explain the equipment, cargo or passengers, and intended operation when asking about your application.

Use this page as a planning guide, then verify your individual requirements with Texas DPS. Keep a checklist for agency documents, knowledge study, applicable training and the skills appointment. Completing one part does not automatically complete the others.

Gather your application documents

Texas DPS lists identity, citizenship or lawful-presence evidence, Social Security information, medical self-certification and applicable medical records among its requirements. New residents and vehicle owners should review the agency’s vehicle-registration and insurance instructions. Start with the official CDL application checklist for the documents that apply to you.

For residency, DPS generally requires two printed documents showing your name and residential address. Its accepted-document list includes qualifying utility or service bills, leases and financial statements. The 30-day residency requirement is waived for CDL applicants, but proof of residency is still required. Read the current Texas residency rules and exceptions before choosing documents.

Prepare for the permit examinations

DPS lists the examination order as Texas Commercial Rules, General Knowledge, Combination for Class A, Air Brake when applicable, then endorsements. Review the practice-subject guide to organize your study.

Texas CDL knowledge examinations are administered in English from June 1, 2026. Skills examinations are also conducted in English. Older Spanish references remain available for background study; they do not change the language requirements of the official examination.

Coordinate the permit, ELDT and skills appointment

DPS requires the applicable CLP holding period of at least 14 days before skills testing. Review the ELDT overview and verify any required completion with the provider. Check the current medical-certification process and resolve record questions before reserving equipment.

Arrange a vehicle representative of the credential you seek. Discuss transmission, brakes, trailer or bus configuration, appointment location and rental terms. Review test truck rental planning and the inspection reference guide. The examiner determines the result; a rental or practice purchase does not guarantee a license.

Before you travel to the appointment

Review your confirmation, document checklist and current permit. Keep the government appointment and the vehicle reservation together in your calendar, and confirm each separately if a date changes. Ask questions early when an agency instruction or vehicle requirement is unclear.
